Culture of (STEM) Learning
Standard 1
School/program provides equitable opportunities for students to engage in high quality STEM learning.
Dekalb Academy of Technology & Environment Charter School serves over 750 students from various ethnic groups. Not only do our students bring an array of cultural backgrounds, but they also bring various academic abilities as well. Our academic populations include students from general education, special education, gifted program, and English Speaking Other Languages program. With such a diverse population in ethnicity and academics, it is essential to provide equitable learning and STEM opportunities for all of our students.
D.A.T.E. is committed to ensuring all populations have an opportunity to participate in the STEM driven curriculum, as well as opportunities outside of the school and into the community. African-American males and females immersing themselves into a STEM culture has been a priority. Artifacts demonstrate our students participating in programs outside of the school that have allowed them to use the knowledge gained from our curriculum.
Standard 2
STEM educators collaborate to develop, implement, and improve high quality STEM learning activities.
D.A.T.E.’s mantra has included relationship building since the beginning of its conception, implementing educator collaboration, has been an important focus. Our Monday afternoons are reserved for faculty meetings as an entire staff and grade level meetings are scheduled throughout the week amongst the teachers. Our Academic Coach and content leaders meet with teachers throughout the year to assist with Title I initiatives, instructional goals, and data driven assessments. The School Leadership team meets weekly to review data, activities, and the needs of the school. Each semester teachers have an opportunity to participate in Professional Development Day (PD Day). PD Days have been dedicated to STEM collaboration amongst the teachers and staff in the building. As an emphasis on developing high effective STEM learning, our educators meet throughout the month with an established agenda in efforts to collaborate, create, and plan for STEM learning experiences and best practices. The PBL framework has allowed teachers to incorporate the elements of STEM into their teaching practices and plan for high quality instruction.
Standard 3
School/program engages diverse STEM community in order to support and sustain STEM programs and initiatives.
As a charter school D.A.T.E. can not progress without the help of the community. There are various stakeholders, leaders, and organizations that have embraced the school’s vision and mission. Many of these stakeholders and organizations participate in various school activities throughout the school year. Their dedication has allowed us to establish and maintain the STEM work that is done on our campus and with our students.
